Mariner's Park

Mariner’s Park is the smallest of the four river front parks – just over seven acres – located off the south end of Alter Road. The park offers a working lighthouse, great fishing access to the river, a large amount of open green space, and great views.

In 1928, a Marine hospital was constructed on this site. Other than the hospital, the land that became Mariner’s Park was home to a lighthouse, an inn, a dance hall, boathouses, and a boat livery. The U.S. government built a few more buildings in the 1940’s. The hospital closed in 1969 and it became a methadone clinic. In 1981, the city bought the property, and eventually tore down all the buildings. None of the buildings were of historic value, but the site is thought to be home of a windmill built by early French settlers.
