Lakewood East Park

Lakewood East Park consists of 28 acres, located at the south end of Alter Road. This park also has great views of Belle Isle, and is completely surrounded by water – on three sides by canals, the fourth by the Detroit River. Like the Alfred Brush Ford Park, Lakewood has been largely untouched and currently, its biggest asset is its views of the river and access to the waterway. This park is also a popular fishing spot.

Up to the early 1960’s, Lakewood East Park was used largely by businesses that leased buildings on the property. The city ended the leases at that time, proclaiming that they wanted to develop the park to a far greater extent. Unfortunately, the city ran out of money for its recreation project, so there was never any development. The Lighthouse Recreation center sat on part of the park property, and was targeted as an asset to be preserved by the community – in 2004, the structure was destroyed by fire.
